Students will begin the development of a professional e-portfolio that demonstrates their commitment to ongoing professional competence and which may be used as a reference throughout their nursing career.
Task: Students are to construct a professional portfolio that includes the following

Personal Nursing Philosophy – this should demonstrate application of two (2) of the UTS Bachelor of Nursing Graduate Attributes
Professional Nursing Standards – using the Registered Nurses Standards for Practice (2016),describe how you intend to demonstrate the development of ONE (1) of the following standards in preparation for or when on clinical placement

Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships OR
Standard 6: Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice

Personal Nursing Philosophy
According to me, involving in a career such as nursing is one of the biggest opportunities as the field provides scope for helping the people with need. As a nurse it is my duty to provide adequate quality care service to the patient and ensure patient safety. Beyond physical support I think providing emotional support is also a big responsibility of the nurses. One of the most important responsibility of a nurse is to provide person centred care. Such process is appropriate in order to understand the individual need and prepare care plan for meet them in an effective manner. It is important to consider the aspects of holistic care during providing person centered care. The person centred care helps to understand the need of the people from diverse background. In such care it is important for a nurse to advocate for the rights of individual patient and their family. According to me a nurse should use person centred care to promote effective health strategies and reduce the risk of severe illness. Communication and collaboration is another important part of the nursing profession. The nurses should communicate in an effective manner for safe practice. Proper communication would help to collaborate with other health professionals. Effective communication helps to manage a patient and reduce difficulties in the treatment process. Thus, as a nurse I would like to follow guidelines of person centred care and communication in order to improve my service and establish myself as a successful nurse in near future.
 
Professional Nursing Standards
The professional nursing standards or the registered nurse standards for practice provides effective guidelines which is important to maintain by a registered nurse to provide evidence based person centred care with preventative formative, curative, palliative, restorative and supportive elements. The registered nurse establish effective therapeutic and professional relationship in their practice with individual having physical or mental health issues. The guidelines provided by the nursing standard of practice helps to improve the quality of service and fulfil their responsibilities in an effective manner. The registered nurse standard of practice provided seven standard for practice from which the second standard is one of the most effective standard that provides guidelines for Engage in therapeutic and professional relationship. According to the standard 2 of NMBA standard of practice, it is important to establish effective therapeutic and professional relationship while considering collegial generosity in mutual trust and respect in the nursing practice. In this regards, the nurses should engage in the therapeutic in a way that could effectively differentiate the boundaries between the personal and professional relationship. The nurses should communicate with the patients and other health professionals in a respectful manner (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au. 2016, p 1-8). Such communication skill would help to gain trust of the health professionals thus, the nurses could reduce difficulties in collaboration. Hence, it could help to build interprofessional relationship effectively (Pfaff et al. 2014, p 4-20). An effective communication with patient would help to gain the trust of the patient and reduce difficulties in vital sign assessment and treatment process. It is important to maintain respect, dignity, culture, belief and rights in the communication. It would help to get the consent of the patients regarding the treatment process without any barriers (Curtis et al. 2013, p 2271-2281).
The nurses should recognize that people are experts in their own experience of life. It is essential for a nurse to provide support to the people with need and give adequate resources to facilitate their decision regarding their health. According to the standard 2 of NMBA standard of practice, it is important to advocate on behalf of the people in a respectful manner in order to ensure legal capacity and autonomy. In order to achieve improve and positive health outcomes it is important to use delegation, coordination, referrals, supervision and consultation in the therapeutic relationship. In order to establish effective professional relationship it is mandatory to promote the culture of safety in the nursing practice and share the knowledge with other health professional. It would help to facilitate collaborative practice. In addition, it is important to report the notifiable conduct of health workers, professionals and other staffs of the health care organization in order to maintain therapeutic and professional relationship in the nursing practice (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au. 2016, p 1-8). However, to fulfil the requirements of the guidelines the nurses should gather adequate knowledge regarding the standard of practice. It would help to utilize the guidelines, identify the areas of development and improve their role in establishing therapeutic relationship (Wyder et al. 2015, p 181-189).
