Students provides a clear and adequate explanation and description of the area of interest in their professional practice and steps of EBP process.
A comprehensive explanation and description of the steps of EBP process.

Definition of EBP
EBP can be used as the use of the best current evidence to make decisions concerning the care of the patient (McInnes et al., 2015). Patients admitted in the hospital wards always encounter many and different challenges. One of the greatest challenge are the bed sores. According to recent studies, nearly 15% of the patients who spent on the hospital beds develop bed sores (McInnes et al., 2015). There is therefore the need to come up with measures to counter that so that patients do not continue suffering. One of the alternatives is the use of air mattresses. Medical air mattresses are specially inflated and have low air alarms (Qaseem, Mir, Starkey, & Denberg, 2015). They are also designed in a manner that can reduce shear as well as friction so as to prevent development of air sores. Air mattresses are an arsenal in healing all the stages of bed sores.
According to recent studies, it was established that among the mortalities in the Intensive Care Units, 63% of them besides succumbing to the condition they are suffering from, suffer from complications of bed sores (Simon J. & Patricia W., 2015) .It is this fact that necessitated the need to come up with an efficient and long lasting solution to reduce on the incidences Lozano-Montoya et al., 2016). Air mattresses have in the previous studies shown signs of relief to the many patients who are admitted at the Intensive Care Units or the HDUs.
Questions as to if air mattresses are effective or the best alternative in controlling bed sores continue to pop up each time and it remains to be seen if indeed it is the way to go (Serraes et al., 2018). The clinical question using the PICOT model in this particular topic is: Does the use of air mattresses reduce incidences of bed sores among critically ill patients in the ICU as compared to frequent changing of the patient’s position? The clinical question can be better demonstrated in a table form using the PICOT format as illustrated below.

The population in this scenario are the critically ill patients who are bedridden at the hospital.

The intervention is the use of air mattresses.

The intervention is being compared with the frequent change in position of the patient.

The expected outcome is a reduction in the incidences of bed sores.

There is no exact time for this particular nursing practice.

Search for evidence
I will search for different literature materials using major words. The words to be used in this case include bed sores, air mattresses, bedridden patients, Intensive care units. One of the most reliable search database is the PubMed.
For effective critical appraisal, I will select a variety of articles then go through the methods and results and then evaluate on the reliability and the validity of the results that were obtained.
Integration of evidence
Air mattresses can indeed be effective in controlling bed sores among bedridden patients and this practice is exactly similar to that found in the literature material. The method is very friendly and it is not associated with any harm but comes with a lot of benefits.
The best way to evaluate this nursing practice is conducting surveys in health institutions that have already implemented the practice .The results from the survey will then be sufficient to evaluate the effectiveness of the initiative from the already existing literature.
Disemination of information
The information acquired from this research will go a long way in assisting several hospitals and will be disseminated through online platforms as well as empowering the healthcare staffs through regular seminars and workshops.
Incidences of bed sores have of late been on the rise. There is the need to come up with the best solution. One of the solutions is the use of air mattresses. These are specially inflated mattresses with low air alarms just designed to reduce development of bed sores among bedridden patients. This form of nursing practice has reduced the incidence of pressure sores by 15% for the past short period. All hospitals should work hard and install this mattresses so as to effectively reduce the cases of bed sores.
