Working with this family, it would be impertinent to make each member feel comfortable, as well as respecting his or her cultural beliefs as Gehart (2016) speculates. While advancing in the small talk of the social stage, it would be useful for a therapist to observe a few behaviors that can also help postulate more perspective into the family’s functionality such as who sits where, the overall mood portrayed by the family, the relationship connections, and the family’s response to therapy.Strategic Family Therapy Discussion Essay
As mentioned by Gehart, the main goal of therapy is to get people to behave differently in order to obtain different subjective experiences (2016). The issue that seems relevant in this family is Nirisha’s goals in which are different than her parent’s wishes for her life. The overall goal to be examined would be reducing the engagement within Nirisha’s life by changing the level of involvement (Gebhart, 2016).
Techniques that can be incorporated into therapy sessions for Nirisha’s family would be joining and directives. Joining is a concept that is used to help clients feel comfortable. Furthermore, joining the family allows a therapist to stay neutral and gain perspective into the lives and functionality of the family (Biter, 2014). According to both Biter (2014) and Gehart (2016) directives are one of the most basic techniques that can be utilized by a strategic therapist. Directives allow people to overcome their challenging situations by minimal change (Gebhart,2016). Straightforward directives purpose is to alter the system in order to end a problem. This directive includes giving advice, making suggestions, coaching and giving ordeal-therapy assignments (Biter, 2014). Accepting Nirisha as a functional adult who is capable of making her own decisions would be a challenge for this family, as they might feel she is rebelling and denying her cultural beliefs. This approach may work for this family, because essentially is predictable and can be achieved uniformly across the family by giving clear direction on what needs to be done. There would be steps in order for the family to adjust to the changes such as giving directions, establishing goals (and coaching on how to successfully achieve them), methods of evaluations as well as defining old and new roles. Provide an example of a family in your practicum using a structural family map. Note: Be sure to maintain HIPAA regulations.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.Strategic Family Therapy Discussion Essay

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.Strategic Family Therapy Discussion Essay

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.Strategic Family Therapy Discussion Essay

Reflection on Culture and Strategic Family Therapy
Multicultural issues may impact the therapeutic process for both the therapist and the client. One issue a therapist might face is being fully aware of every aspect of the families ethnic and cultural background. Richeport-Haley (1998), discusses strategies that can be utilized to deal with ethnicity such as minimizing ethnic issues as much as possible and focusing on social context/family structure, focusing on ethnicity as the basic therapy approach, and combining two approaches together. To better understand a therapists role in diverse situations, Richeport-Haley(1998) provided the example of an East Indian man, who beat his wife due to his diminishing status because he was unable to obtain work in the United States, where his wife did, was arrested and quickly learned it is illegal to beat your spouse in this society. The author of the article went on to articulate it is the therapist’s position to not discover the social difference but to intervene to ensure the violence ends and issues are handled in non-violent manner. This may become frustrating to the Indian man, due to the cultural indifference that women are to be submissive in other cultures, where as in the United States, women have equal rights as men and laws protect both genders from being battered. This could be another issue that may develop within the therapist/client relationship. It seems that the article was discussing situations in which cultural values and ethnic materials are relevant to therapy in addition to when cultural attributes should be minimized (i.e domestic violence).Strategic Family Therapy Discussion Essay
Nirisha comes from a culture in which children are expected to follow the rules their parents provide, without question. In the case of this family, it would be beneficially to utilize a brief strategic, family-oriented approach that can be used as an additional way to work with ethnical groups (Richeport-Haley, 1998). In a session, it would be a therapist’s job to respect the cultural patterns exhibited by the family. In Nirisha’s case, her parents wish her to take on a management position after she graduates from high school and earn a salary, yet she ahs her own endeavors that are different than the goals of her parents. As a culture-focused approach, exploring the importance of positive functions of a close-knit family would emphasize the value of forgiveness based on their cultural ethnic practices (Richeport-Haley, 1988). Understanding the important of the grandfather’s immigration status and operating a successful restaurant to the family, will help Nirisha understand the difficulty he may have endured and why her parents are elated to be able to share the experience with her. In addition to exploring the history of the grandfather and his efforts, Nirisha might be more encouraged to work part time at the restaurant while attending college. This might be a happy compromise for the family. As far as Nirisha’s parents, explaining the cultural barriers Nirisha is faced with, as she has grown up in the American society, and in order to preserve their own cultural beliefs, it is imperative to allow Nirisha to explore not only her historic culture, but the culture she resides in.Strategic Family Therapy Discussion Essay

Prior to my working on this particular assignment, I actually knew very little about family therapy. Although the name of this branch of psychotherapy certainly describes itself, I have always adhered to a belief in individuality and that the interrelationships between people do not matter so much as the individuals themselves do. However, after learning about family therapy, I believe that my former belief was incorrect. Familial relations play an important role in the health and well being of the individual. In fact, they may actually account for a fair amount of problems even if there is physical and emotional distance between family members. Thus, the insight that I gained through family therapy has helped to revise my personal worldview and to inform it a great deal.Strategic Family Therapy Discussion Essay
