For this assessment, complete the following:
Write an essay explaining the aesthetic principles expressed in visual arts and describe how they changed from the Baroque period through the early twentieth century.Which basic features were preserved through the centuries, and which changed dramatically?
How do you think artists choose which styles to employ in their own work?
Consider how these styles are exemplified in commercial design during our own time. Collect eight or ten visual images from Web sites and advertisements and explain how they incorporate traditional elements of visual design. Are our decisions to purchase items of clothing, jewelry, automobiles, appliances, and services influenced significantly by the visual forms in which they are presented?
Although your paper should offer a general thesis about the use of visual arts, much of the support you offer in its defense will involve details chosen from the specific examples you select. As you write, look for ways to tie everything together with your own view of the role that the visual arts continue to play in our everyday lives.
Additional Requirements
Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
APA formatting: Your paper should be formatted according to APA (6th edition) style and formatting.
Length: 4–6 typed and double-spaced pages.
Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.Visual Aesthetic Principles in Art Essay
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.Visual Aesthetic Principles in Art Essay
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.Visual Aesthetic Principles in Art Essay
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.Visual Aesthetic Principles in Art Essay
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.Visual Aesthetic Principles in Art Essay
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
Elements & Principles of Art Essay
This essay is in relation to the artwork on page. 110, called The Knight, Death, and the Devil created by Albrecht Dürer, the medium is prints. At first glimpse, the artwork seems dark especially since the effect is black and white, with creatures that seem dark. What stands out the most is the size of the Knight and his horse, which makes you conclude that the artwork is based off of the knight. The points in my essay will be the Principle; Emphasis, the Elements Line and Time, and the meaning of the artwork as a whole.
The Principle of Art that I found is Emphasis. I found this to be the principle because of the size of the knight and his horse. The size of the knight and his horse had to mean that, they were significant in the artwork. In addition to that the fact that the Knight and the horse were directly centered in the artwork, could also mean that they were significant. Another point is that the Knight and the horse are one of the brightest objects in the painting, having an allure. That could mean that the Knight is significant in the artwork
An Elements of Art that I found was depicted well in this artwork is line. I felt as if the Knight being below the mountain and not above could mean that Knight has fallen from grace. Another example of line is between the sword and the staff. The sword and the staff cross together similar to the Christian cross, which could be symbolizing religion. Furthermore I feel as if the devils horns and deaths horns not being straight could contrast the lines of the Knights sword and Staff, possibly symbolizing good and evil.Visual Aesthetic Principles in Art Essay
Lastly, the second Element of Art that I realized was that of time. In the artwork death is holding a running hour glass. The hour glass could mean death and that either the knight’s or the kingdom time was coming. In addition to that, Death being in the picture could also symbolize time because his presence usually represents the ending of life.
Ultimately I believe that the elements and principles of art work together in one methodical way. I believe that the Knight is the main point of the artwork, as pointed out in the description of the principle (Emphasis). As he seems to have fallen from grace and his time is getting shorter and death is approaching, he is still trying to be honorable. The theme in the artwork seems to be death.

To compare and contrast these three paintings is really interesting to do. The Poet and
Starry Night have similar colors and depth to the pictures. The lighting between these two
pictures illuminate the darkness to the night skies. Also, the mood of the mood of these two
paintings feel intriguing and moving. Starry Night and Cafe have similar circular or curving
paint patterns. Such as in the stars and in the lamps. Or the floor boards and the hills have the
same paints strokes. But the Poet painting is completely different in painting rhythm patterns.
The Night Cafe, The Poet-Boch and Starry Night have depth and scale. All three have
scale but used very differently. You can see the use of scale Van Gogh used in the Poet with his
facial features and uses imbalance. Starry Night scales emphasis on the Cypress tree and the
town behind it. Night Cafe uses the most amount of scale because of the pool table as a focal
point. Van Gogh paintings are quite remarkable. Every detail means something to the artist. Van
Gogh explains the in the painting the “Night Cafe”, the blood red and the yellow color represent
terrible human passions. The glow from the lamps hanging above the sleepless villagers in the
cafe. The lighting of the color gives a felling of a “hellish furnace”, as Van Gogh describes it.Visual Aesthetic Principles in Art Essay
The reason of this painting is for Van Gogh to describe to the viewer through light and
color, there is a deeper meaning. The cafe is a place where you could go and find comfort but be
a place to Van Gogh was dangerous. The Starry Night painting looks like it is moving. Literally.
Van Gogh painted the Starry Night with such movement and imagination it looks like the sky is
alive. The sky is twisting and twirling around the stars and the moon. Even the Cypress tree is a
vocal point, painted with imagination. The whole painting, the town, the hills, the tree and the

sky feels alive. Van Gogh called it a “religion” to paint the night sky. The Poet-Boch painting is
a perfect painting depicting contrast. It shows a perfect contrast of light and dark painting
technique. Van Gogh wanted to use the Poet as a symbolic use of color using brighter, lighter
colors against the dark sky. The symbolism of the brighter colors are of the poet’s dreams. Also
Van Gogh painted the Poet’s body with such definition so you know there is a reason why he is
painted against a night sky
